How are these times calculated?

Times are calculated astronomically from the sun's position relative to the city's coordinates: Fajr when the sun is a set angle below the horizon, Dhuhr at solar noon, and Maghrib a set angle after sunset, when the eastern redness disappears.

The Tehran Institute of Geophysics method uses 17.7° for Fajr and 4.5° for Maghrib; the Najaf al-Ashraf method uses 18° for Fajr and 4° for Maghrib, with Imsak ten minutes before Fajr.

Islamic midnight is halfway between sunset and the next dawn; the precautionary Fajr prayer is a short delay after the adhan to be certain the time has begun.

What you'd like to know

What is the difference between sunset and Maghrib?

Sunset is when the sun's disc disappears below the horizon; the Maghrib adhan comes a few minutes later, when the redness in the eastern sky has gone.

What is Islamic midnight?

It is the midpoint between sunset and true dawn; it marks the end of the preferred time for the Maghrib and Isha prayers.

Why is Imsak different from the Fajr adhan?

Imsak is a precaution ten minutes before the Fajr adhan in the Najaf method, so a fasting person stops eating before dawn begins.

Do these times match the Assaqi app?

Yes — the website, the app and the widget use exactly the same calculation, so the times match to the minute.
